Experienced advocacy for Austin ISD students and schools

It’s time to re-elect Lynn Boswell as your Austin ISD Trustee for District 5!

Trustee Lynn Boswell has a long history of effective advocacy and hands-on volunteer work with Austin’s students, families, teachers, and education community, both as an experienced AISD Trustee and as a public education advocate at the local, state, and national levels.

Lynn's work on the Austin ISD board has brought stability, transparency, and promise to the district's students, staff, and families. Since she was elected in 2020, the board has hired a superintendent who shares our values and brings a powerful set of skills to the work, passed a historic $2.4 billion bond to improve safety and rebuild aging campuses, and worked to stabilize and strengthen Austin ISD after disruptions caused by Covid and turnover of district leadership. Key improvements include increasing teacher and staff retention; protecting programs like arts, dual language, and school libraries; and strengthening relationships with the city, county, and community.

Still, much work remains to ensure Austin ISD schools fully reflect our shared values: deepening family partnerships district-wide, ensuring that all students receive a joyful and strong education that emphasizes engaging learning over standardized tests, addressing enrollment, and continuing to fight for fair funding for public schools in our district and our state. Lynn stands ready to use her experience on the board to continue supporting the district’s progress and potential in a second term.

During her time on the AISD Board of Trustees, Lynn has served as board Secretary and has led the Intergovernmental Relations Committee. In that role, she has guided the Board’s advocacy efforts at the Texas Capitol, fighting for increased funding for public schools, advocating for reforms of the recapture system, and speaking up for policies that ensure a strong education for all Texas students and a supportive environment for all Texas educators.

A statewide leader in public education, Lynn has earned respect for being a strategic problem-solver and a strong voice for policies that serve students, support educators, and strengthen our schools. She serves as a director of the Texas Association of School Boards, helped create Just Fund It TX, and is a member of the national Local Progress School Board Steering Committee.

Before being elected as Trustee, Lynn served as President of the Austin Council of PTAs from 2018 to 2020. She worked closely with families, district employees, and community groups as a collaborative leader, careful listener, and creative problem solver to ensure meaningful partnerships and shared decision-making for families district-wide. Under her leadership, ACPTA won a National PTA advocacy award in 2019 and a national award for diversity and inclusion in 2020.

Lynn is the proud mom of two Austin ISD graduates, and her volunteer service in AISD began at their elementary school in District 5. She is an effective voice for progressive policies that improve the lives of children and families — through the city of Austin’s Juvenile Justice Workgroup, the Travis County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee, and Just Fund It TX, which advocates for increased school funding statewide. Lynn also served as a longtime mentor for local high school students through PBS NewsHour Extra Student Reporting Labs.

After attending public schools in San Antonio, Lynn earned degrees in Latin American Studies and Journalism from SMU and a law degree from The University of Texas. She has worked as a network news producer with NBC News in New York, as a series producer for the Austin-based PBS programs Texas Monthly Talks and Overheard with Evan Smith, and now makes independent documentaries. She’s grateful for the fantastic education that her children received in Austin ISD, including the 7th grade science elective that sparked her son’s career path, and works to ensure that all students have opportunities to find joy, discovery, and the support they need to thrive in Austin ISD.
